SALEM, Va. – Four Georgia Tech players were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference baseball team, while pitcher/designated hitter Micah Owings was named the 2003 ACC Rookie of the Year. Owings and sophomore second baseman Eric Patterson were both selected to the first team, while a pair of juniors in pitcher Kyle Bakker and outfielder Matt Murton were tabbed to the second team.
Owings led the Yellow Jackets with 14 home runs as a DH and is currently tied for the team lead with eight wins as a pitcher. The freshman from Gainesville, Ga., is batting .304 with 40 RBI on the season, and is 8-1 with a 3.81 ERA in 75.2 innings on the mound. Owings is Tech’s first ACC Rookie of the Year since Mark Teixiera won the honor in 1999.
A first-team selection for the second consecutive season, Patterson is batting .282 with a team high 32 stolen bases in 37 attempts. Murton earned second team All-ACC honors for the second straight year, being named to the second team after hitting .307 with 13 home runs and a team-high 49 RBI in the regular season. Also a second-team all-ACC pick in 2002, Bakker went 8-1 with a 3.75 ERA in the regular season and he is 25-4 in his career.
Wake Forest third baseman Jamie D’Antona was named the 2003 ACC Player of the Year, while NC State head coach Elliott Avent was named the ACC Coach of the Year.
