Four Jackets To Compete At Indoor NCAA Championships

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech freshman Ashlee Kidd, sophomore Chaunte Howard and juniors Montrell Person and Shanta Smith will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, for the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The NCAA meet will start at 9 a.m. on Friday and run through Saturday evening.

Kidd will run the 400 meters at the NCAA Championships. She won the Atlantic Coast Conference title in the 400m at the ACC Indoor meet with a season-best time of 53.50 and currently stands 16th in country. Kidd was named Indoor ACC Rookie of the Year on Feb. 26, 2004.

Howard will compete in her second straight NCAA Championships in the women’s high jump. Howard finished 10th at the meet last year en route to garnering All-America honors. Howard currently ranks No. 1 in the nation with an ACC and school record jump of 6’01.75″ at the Indoor ACC meet, winning the high jump for the second straight year. Howard was named ACC Co-Performer of the Year on Feb. 26.

Person is heading to his first Indoor NCAA Championship meet in the 60-meter hurdles. Person stands seventh in the NCAA in the 60mH with his school record time of 7.76, tallied on Jan. 24 at the Clemson Invitational. Person won the ACC crown in the 60mH for the first time in his career.

Smith will be the final Tech competitor at the Indoor NCAA Championships. Smith broke the school record in the triple jump at the Clemson Opener (12/6/03) with a mark of 43’04.50″. She ranks 10th in the nation with that mark and finished runner-up at the Indoor ACC Championships in the triple jump, garnering All-ACC honors.

Chaunte Howard (High Jump) – Saturday, March 13 – 4:45 p.m. prelims and finals

Montrell Person (60mH) – Friday, March 12 – 5:20 p.m. prelims/finals at 8:20 p.m.

Shanta Smith (Triple Jump) – Saturday, March 13 – 4:10 p.m. prelims and finals
