ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team welcomed some of the region’s top collegiate talent to Bill Moore Tennis Center Friday for the Yellow Jackets’ first home tournament of the fall.
In Day One of the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational, the Yellow Jackets proved to be successful in both singles and doubles play. Five singles players and two doubles teams advanced to Saturday’s semifinals for Tech.
Senior Romain Coirault won his first two singles matches of the tournament, defeating Kentucky’s Elliot Datlow, 6-0, 6-1, and Furman’s Lee Nickell, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, yo advance to the semifinals. Coirault also teamed with freshman Joao Menano to win two doubles matches Friday and will face Demetrias Leantis and Todd Carlson of Georgia Saturday aftenoon.
Four Tech underclassman also advanced to the semifinals in singles play. Menano, like his doubles partner Coirault, was undefeated on the opening day. He defeated Set Hauser of Furman, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round and then knocked off Christopher Peterson of Armstrong Atlantic State, 6-4, 6-1.
Freshman Alex Novinkov defeated Will Glenn of UGA, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) to advance to the semifinals.
Sophomore David Wright received a first-round bye and then defeated Furman’s Chris Henderson, 6-2, 6-2. Classmate Fabio Campos defeated Peter Rabsamen, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals.
Senior Sergio Aguirre and freshman Amit Taggar won their first two doubles matches and will play Brandon Wagner and Nicolas Boecker of Georgia in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.
Aguirre and Taggar also won first-round singles matches for the Yellow Jackets.
Play continues Saturday at 9 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday.
