Five Yellow Jackets Head to U.S. Olympic Trials

July 8, 2004

ATLANTA Brandy Depland, Chaunte Howard, Brendon Mahoney, Montrell Person and Amandi Rhett will all represent Georgia Tech at the U.S. Olympic Trials, July 9-18, in Sacramento, Calif. The top three finishers, with Olympic qualifying standards, will represent Team USA in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

“We’re excited to have student-athletes qualify for such a great track meet,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “Historically this has been a great track meet every four years. We’ve had some very good fortune three of the last four years. Georgia Tech has been present and has represented the U.S. at the Olympic games and several have medaled. They do a great job running this event and we anticipate having another successful meet for Tech athletes.”

Joining the current Tech track athletes at the trials will be former Tech track standouts David Krummenacker (1994, 1996-98) and Angelo Taylor (1997-98). Krummenacker holds the top time in the men’s 800 meters (1:44.30) in the U.S. and was a two-time NCAA national champion for the Yellow Jackets. Taylor attained Gold in Sydney in the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Both will compete on Friday night, Taylor at 9:30 p.m. and Krummenacker at 10:20 p.m. ET.

Mahoney ended his senior season by tallying All-America honors in the 1500 meters for the men’s track and field team. The Cumming, Ga., native will run the 1500 at the Trials, competing in the quarterfinal round at 11 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 15th.

Person qualified for the trials for Tech in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles and will compete in the qualifying round on Saturday, July 17th, at 3:35 p.m. ET. Person garnered All-America honors for the first time in his career at the outdoor NCAA meet in the 110m hurdles.
