Five Jackets Named Academic All-ACC

Complete ACC All-Academic Teams

THE FLATSCarla du Plessis, Nicole Fegans and Bria Matthews were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic team for women’s outdoor track and field, while Brian Hauch and Alex Thomas were named to the men’s team by the conference office on Thursday.

Matthews, a graduate student from Morrow, Ga., and Fegans, a senior from Douglasville, Ga., recently earned All-America status at the 2021 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. Matthews garnered first team All-America honors in the women’s triple jump after setting a new personal and school record in the event after leaping for a mark of 13.90m/45′ 7.25″ to take sixth-place overall. She also was women’s field MVP at the ACC Championships after earning silver medals in the long and triple jumps. Fegans clocked in at 15:59.72 in the women’s 5K final, placing 15th with the second-best time in that event in her career giving her a spot on the second team All-America list. She also was the ACC champion in the women’s 10,000 meters. du Plessis, a freshman jumper, qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the high jump this spring.

Matthews is a 4.0 student pursuing a Master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. As an undergraduate student, she earned Faculty Honors four times and Dean’s List honors four times. Fegans, a senior in business administration with a 3.0 GPA, has earned Dean’s List honors five times. du Plessis compiled a 3.61 GPA in computer science and earned Dean’s List honors this spring.

Hauch, a junior from Lilburn, Ga., and Thomas, a sophomore from Bogart, Ga., qualified for the NCAA East Regional this spring in the pole vault and the 800 meters, respectively. Hauch earned a 3.69 GPA in mechanical engineering and has earned Faculty Honors three times, while Thomas posted a 3.50 mark in civil and environmental engineering.

NCAA champion Michaela Meyer of Virginia and national record-holder Yared Nuguse of Notre Dame were named the 2021 Scholar-Athletes of the Year for ACC Outdoor Track and Field and lead the sport’s All-ACC Academic Teams announced on Thursday.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
