Five Homer Inning Gives Tech Sweep over GWU

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech baseball kept the win streak going when it poured on five home runs to sweep Gardner-Webb, 13-8, on Sunday afternoon at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (26-18) scored seven runs in the second inning, thanks to home runs from Angelo Dispigna, Drew Compton, Jack Rubenstein, Jake DeLeo and Stephen Reid. Tech finished with 19 hits on the day as Dispigna led with a perfect 5-for-5 day. Reid and Jadyn Jackson also finished with three hits, while DeLeo, Compton and Rubenstein all finished with two hits. John Giesler also drove in two runs late.

RHP Finley (2-4) also delivered on the mound, holding the Runnin’ Bulldogs (27-16) to just two runs through five innings as he struck out four to earn his second win of the season. Gardner-Webb stayed scrappy and scored five on LHP Camron Hill before RHP Aeden Finateri pitched the final 3.1 innings of three-hit, one-run ball to slam the door, earning his third career save.

Gardner-Webb was led by Humberto Torres, who went 4-for-5 on the day. LHP Reid Bertram (1-4) took the loss, surrendering eight earned runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings.

Georgia Tech will get the week off to finish final exams before concluding its homestand with Pitt on May 5-7. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.

Postgame Notes:

  • Jackson Finley’s win on the mound Sunday capped a stellar week for the two-way talent. In four games this week, he hit .412 with seven hits, two doubles and four home runs for a gaudy 12 RBI. He’s slugged 1.235 with a .474 on-base percentage.
  • Raising his season average to .327, John Giesler is currently on a nine-game hit streak and has multiple hits in five of his last six. In those nine games, Giesler has hit .457 for 16 hits, four doubles, a triple and three home runs for 13 RBI. He’s slugging .886 with a .525 on-base percentage, getting hit once and drawing four walks.
  • With Angelo Dispigna’s 5-for-5 effort on Sunday, he finished the week hitting .615 for eight hits and two home runs, striking out just once and drawing a whopping eight walks for a .762 on-base percentage in the four wins for Tech.
