ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s backcourt duo of Shaun Fein and Tony Akins combined for 42 points and the Yellow Jackets hit 16 three-pointers in a 96-85 exhibition victory over USDBL All-Stars Team Fokus Monday at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at McDonald’s Center.
Fein led the Jackets with 23 points, while Akins added 19 points and eight assists. Fein and Akins each nailed four treys, as did freshman Marvin Lewis, who finished with 16 points. Center Alvin Jones was the fourth Yellow Jacket in double figures as he tallied 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. T.J. Vines and Halston Lane added eight points each.
“I thought we played a little bit harder,” said Tech head coach Paul Hewitt. “We still didn’t contest threes well, and we still didn’t rebound the way we need to rebound. I thought we ran the floor better, but we’ve still got a long way to go.”
Tech made 16 of 27 three-pointers and 14 of 16 free throws while shooting 48 percent from the field. The Jackets led from the opening tip and built an 18-point lead in the first half as Akins scored 17 points, including all four of his three-pointers, before the intermission.
“We can shoot the ball,” said Hewitt. “I’ve said that from the beginning. We have to improve our ball movement to get good looks at the basket, but when we’re open, we’re going to make shots.”
Tech opens the regular season Friday, hosting Wofford at 7:30 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
