Falconi Leads Tech on Second Day of Tournament Play

Jan. 17, 2009

ATLANTA – The No. 8 Georgia Tech women’s team combined to win 10 matches Saturday at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

Irina Falconi, a freshman from Jupiter, Fla., picked up a pair of victories at the Freeman Memorial to reach the finals of the singles main draw. Falconi opened the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 1 seed Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State. In her semifinal match, Falconi knocked off third-seeded Melanie Gloria of Fresno State, 6-1, 6-2.

Amanda McDowell, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, defeated Baylor’s Jelena Stanivuk, 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals but was unable to setup an all Georgia Tech final when she fell in her second match of the day to USC’s Sarah Fanslet, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles play, McDowell and Falconi reached Sunday’s semifinal round without playing because Arizona State’s duo of Nadia Abdala and Laila Abdala defaulted.

At the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, Noelle Hickey picked up a three-set 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Amanda Fink of USC in third round of the main draw before falling in the semifinals to Stanford’s Hillary Barte, 6-2, 6-1.

In the consolation draw, Christy Striplin opened the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Stanford’s Lindsey Burdette. Striplin then returned to the court and defeated Kirsten Flower of Ohio State, 7-5, 6-2. Hillary Davis and Lynn Blau also picked up singles wins for the Jackets in the consolation round.

The Yellow Jackets will conclude competition at both the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic Sunday. Results will be posted at the conclusion of the day’s competition on ramblinwreck.com, Georgia Tech’s official athletic website.
