English Named to Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List

DURHAM, N.C. – Georgia Tech baseball redshirt junior Tristin English was selected to the preseason 2019 Golden Spikes Award watch list, USA Baseball announced on Thursday.

One of the top two-way players in the country, English joins the 55-man initial list that features the nation’s top amateur players from both high school and college baseball. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board maintains the list that rolls throughout the year, allowing additional consideration to be earned. The Williamson, Ga. native is one of just nine players selected from the ACC.

This is the eighth year since 2008 that at least one Yellow Jacket has made the preseason watch list. In the same time span, only three ACC schools and only 12 programs in the country have had representation more often.

English is coming off his best collegiate year, earning ABCA/Rawlings Atlantic all-region second-team honors and being named to the all-ACC first team as a utility player in 2018. A versatile talent, he saw time at DH, first base and on the mound over the course of 54 games for the then-sophomore. English drove in a team-high 60 RBI last season, hitting .279 with six home runs and a team-high 17 doubles at the plate last season, while also having the Jackets’ third-lowest ERA at 4.11. In 16 total appearances (nine starts), he fanned 51 batters – walking just 13 – and received two decision wins and one save.

Capitalizing on his sophomore campaign, English carried his momentum well into the summer in the Cape Cod League. En route to All-Star honors, he batted .300 overall, driving home 19 RBI and blasting five home runs. On the mound, English tossed nearly 70 combined innings – his first summer pitching action since undergoing successful Tommy John surgery in January 2017.

USA Baseball will announce a midseason watch list on April 10, before semifinalists (May 15) and finalists (May 29) are announced. The winner of the 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be named on Friday, June 14.

Tickets for this upcoming season are now fully underway with season tickets beginning as low as $125 and adult single-game tickets starting at $8. Georgia Tech will also be offering “Family Four Packs” this season, a special package that includes four general admission tickets for just $25, at more than a 20-percent savings.
