ATLANTA – Eight of the 15 Georgia Tech softball players attained a grade point average of 3.0 or higher this past fall semester, including one 4.0 GPA, and will be recognized at halftime of the men’s Duke basketball game on Feb. 22 in Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets enter the 2006 season with a preseason ranking of No. 24 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll. Tech won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships last season and finished with a record of 51-14, one win shy of tying the school record. Tech set a new school record with 159 stolen bases, which led the nation in 2005.
Players that will be honored are: sophomore Savannah Brown (biology), freshman Whitney Haller (industrial engineering), junior Kristina Hull (science, technology and culture), sophomore Becky McCraw (management), sophomore Aileen Morales (management), senior Christine Sheridan (economics), freshman Blair Shimandle (undecided) and junior Sarah Wood (international affairs).
The 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets will get the season underway against No. 18 Missouri, Feb. 10-11, at Glenn Field. The three-game series will begin with a single game on Friday at 2 p.m.
