Eight First-Place Finishes for Georgia Tech at Home Meet

ATLANTA – Ashlee Kidd placed first in the 400-meter dash with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 52.35 to lead Georgia Tech at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday. The Jackets finished the home meet with top-10 finishes.

Kidd, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., blew away the field in her first 400m race of the outdoor season. Kidd placed second in the women’s 200-meter dash with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 23.39.

Junior Jerome Miller surpassed his own school-record in the men’s high jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 7 feet, 3 inches for a first-place finish. Sophomore Juan Cave placed second with a mark of 6 feet, 8 ¾ inches.

Samantha Musil finished the women’s discus in third place with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 158 feet, 1 inch. In fourth place was senior Jewel Welch with a throw of 153 feet, 11 inches and in fifth place was sophomore Kimery Hern, who finished with a mark of 152 feet, 5 inches.

Musil, a freshman from DuBois, Neb., also finished first in the women’s shot put with a personal-best throw of 47 feet, 8 ½ inches. In the men’s shot put, Steve Marcelle broke the outdoor school-record with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 60 feet, ½ inch to place first. Sophomore Andrew Powlen also qualified for the NCAA Regional with a mark of 55 feet, 7 inches to land in third place.

Marcelle, a sophomore from Green Bay, Wis., finished third in the men’s discus with a mark of 168 feet, 1 inch. Powlen placed ninth with a throw of 149 feet, 2 inches.

Junior Shantia Moss also had a first-place finish on the day after finishing the 100-meter hurdles with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.25. Senior Fatmata Fofanah also had an NCAA Regional qualifying time in the 100m hurdles after crossing the line second with a time of 13.59.

Sophomore Dave Ford placed 10th in the men’s 110-meter hurdles after finishing with a time of 14.56.

Senior James Lemons II had first-place finishes in both the men’s long jump and triple jump. In the triple jump, Lemons broke his own personal-best mark with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 51 feet, 8 ½ inches. Lemons then finished the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, ¾ inch. Freshman Alphonso Jordan placed second in the triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying and personal-best distance of 51 feet, 7 inches. In the long jump, Jordan finished third with a mark of 22 feet, 7 ¾ inches.

Sophomore Mellany Stanislaus finished fifth in the women’s triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 40 feet, 9 ½ inches. Senior Lindsey Vincent placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 11 ¾ inches.

Junior Nisha Kurian placed first in the women’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:23.37. She was followed by junior Elena Linn, who crossed the line second with a time of 17:26.57. Senior Mary Chind finished seventh in the 5000m with a time of 17:58.01.

Senior Jenny Sims finished the 1500-meter run in third place with a time of 4:33.62. She was followed by Chind, who crossed the line fourth with a time of 4:37.06.

Junior Derek Hoye had a sixth-place finish in the men’s 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.10. Junior Shantrell Moss also had an eight-place finish when she finished the women’s 100-meter dash in a season-best time of 12.02.

Sophomore Mario Johnson crossed the line eighth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 52.98.

Senior Jenny Sims finished the 1500-meter run in third place with a time of 4:33.62. In fourth was senior Mary Chind with a time of 4:37.06. Sophomore E.C. Gibbs broke his personal-best mark in the men’s 1500m with a time of 3:50.40 for a second-place finish.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay team of sophomore Matt DiDia, senior Brandon Duckett, Johnson and sophomore Austin Whittington crossed the line in ninth place with a time of 3:14.26.
