Wes Durham, Georgia Tech’s Director of Broadcasting and the “Voice of the Jackets,” has been named the 2003 Sportscaster of the Year for the state of Georgia by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. The award is the second for Durham, who also received the honor in 1999.
Durham will be honored at the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s 45th Annual Awards Program, May 1-3 in Salisbury, N.C., the site of the organization’s Hall of Fame.
Durham has served as Tech’s play-by-play voice for football, men’s basketball and baseball since 1995 and has been Director of Broadcasting for the Georgia Tech Director of Broadcasting since 1997. In addition to broadcasting games, he serves as the co-host of weekly television and radio programs with Yellow Jacket football coach Chan Gailey, basketball coach Paul Hewitt and Director of Athletics Dave Braine, and he also appears regularly on other local programming, including “The Southern Football Kickoff Show,” on WQXI-AM and “The Press Box” on Comcast Sports Southeast.
A 1988 graduate of Elon College, Durham previously handled radio play-by-play at Vanderbilt, Marshall and Radford before coming to Tech.
Durham’s father, Woody Durham, the radio voice of the North Carolina Tar Heels since 1971, is a 10-time recipient of the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year award.
