THE FLATS – For the second consecutive year, Georgia Tech’s Lorela Cubaj was named the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s 2022 Women’s College Player of the Year, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Cubaj, who earned the recognition for the first time in 2021, averaged a double-double this season behind 11.1 rebounds and 10.0 points per game. She led the Atlantic Coast Conference all season in rebounding and ranked in the top 20 nationally. In December, Cubaj broke the all-time Georgia Tech women’s basketball program record for career rebounds to become the Yellow Jackets’ all-time leading rebounder.
A two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Cubaj recorded 12 double-doubles this season and started all 32 games. In addition to leading Tech in rebounding, the Terni, Italy, native also led the Jackets in assists (136), steals (44) and blocks (41).
At the end of the regular season, Cubaj picked up All-ACC First Team honors and helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Georgia Tech concluded the season making its 11th appearance, and second consecutive, in the NCAA Tournament.
Earning the Georgia Women’s College Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2022, Cubaj becomes only the second Yellow Jacket in program history to earn the recognition twice. Tyaunna Marshall was the first, receiving the honors in 2013 and 2014.
