Cross Country Readies for UGA Invitational

Sept. 8, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country gears up for week two as it returns to the UGA Golf Course for the first time in 10 years for the 2017 UGA Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The men will run an 8K course at 8:30 a.m. before the women take the 6K race at 9:15 a.m., facing off against Texas A&M, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU and South Carolina, as well as host-team Georgia.

In last year’s UGA Invitational, Georgia Tech the men’s and women’s teams went toe-to-toe with Kennesaw State and Georgia, finishing 1-1 in the dual meet. Both teams downed Kennesaw State (20-43 – women; 15-50 – men), but fell to UGA, 18-39 (women), 22-33 (men). The meet was hosted at the UGA Equestrian Complex.

Leaders from the dual meet returning this year include Mary Prouty and Mary Claire Solomon. Prouty led all Tech women with a sixth-overall finish and personal-best 5K time of 18:24.50 and Solomon, finished seventh overall at 18:28.47 in her college debut.

On the men’s side, Nahom Solomon battled to take second place to lead the Jackets with a time of 25:15.13. Following Solomon with a sixth-place finish was Mitchell Sanders (25:45.41).

Georgia Tech opened its season at the Jacksonville State Open, where it swept both titles in impressive fashion. Leading all runners in the 4K race was freshman Nicole Fegans, who ran unattached. She sported a final time of 14:06.40 and will be competing in the White and Gold this weekend.

Five women placed in the top 10, including Amy Ruiz and Haley Anderson, who took home the top spots. Ruiz had the fastest finish overall (14:20.50) while Anderson placed second with 14:39.50.

Mary Claire Solomon (14:40.30) finished fourth overall while Rebecca Dow (14:57.90) finished sixth. Kristin Fairey’s time of 15:07.10 placed her 10th in the race.

In the men’s 5K, Tech placed runners in the first six spots and seven in the top 10 overall. Nahom Soloman finished with the top time (14:58.10), while Matthew Munns placed second with 15:20.40. Alex Grady (15:25.60), Ryan Peck (15:26.60) and Avery Bartlett (15:29.60) rounded out the top 5 for the race, with Tanner Shaw placing sixth with 15:30.20.
