Cross Country Has Five on All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five student-athletes of the Georgia Tech cross country team were named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Team announced by the league Thursday. Seniors Kelly Meyer and Katie Townsend were recognized on the women’s team, and seniors Alec Clifford and Brandon Lasater, along with freshman Nahom Solomon, were honored on the men’s team.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.

Meyer owns a 3.46 cumulative GPA in business administration and earned a 3.6 GPA during the season. The Roswell, Ga., native was the top finisher for Georgia Tech in four meets and placed first for the Yellow Jackets at the ACC Championships.

The honor marks the second for Townsend, who is a 4.0 GPA student in materials science and engineering. The senior from Augusta, Ga., was named a 2014 ACC Performer of the Week (Sept. 9), and was a consistent top five point scorer for the Yellow Jackets. She was the top finisher for Georgia Tech in two meets and recorded a career-best 6K time at the NCAA South Regional.

Clifford has earned All-ACC Academic honors all four years of his career and owns a 3.59 cumulative GPA in biomedical engineering. He was a top-five finisher for Georgia Tech in four of six meets and finished second for Georgia Tech, and fourth overall, in the Florida Mountain Dew Invitational with a season-best time.

Lasater maintains a 3.56 GPA in electrical engineering. The Perry, Ga., native finished third for Georgia Tech, and 31st out of 197 runners, at the Crimson Classic, and competed in all six meets, crossing the line in the top five in every meet.

In his freshman season on the Flats, Solomon recorded a 3.78 GPA in computer engineering during the season. Solomon competed in five races and recorded a career-best 8K time to finish second for Georgia Tech at the ACC Championships.

The Jackets are back in action Thursday, Feb. 26 – Saturday, Feb. 28 at the ACC Indoor Championships in Blacksburg, Va.
