Countdown to First Pitch: 5 days

Feb. 15, 2009

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech baseball team begins the 2009 season Friday, Feb. 20 when it opens a three-game series with Lipscomb. Every day, leading up to the first pitch, a different member of the 2009 squad will check in with their thoughts on the upcoming season. Today’s blog is by junior infielder/pitcher Patrick Long.

Good evening Yellow Jacket Nation,

If you’re reading this, then I’m assuming that this is not your first visit to ramblinwreck.com. Therefore, you should already know that we’ve had a busy weekend of practice and autograph signing. Today’s practice was at 4 in the afternoon to give us an opportunity to play under the lights before we open up the season. I wish I could sit here and tell you that something exciting happened at practice or that one of the pitchers made a fool of themselves in the locker room, but then I’d be lying. The only thing that happened was some good baseball, as we looked to be in midseason form with another couple days before we start on the road to Omaha. We get to look forward to our day off tomorrow. Even though it’s an “off” day, most of us will find our way to the field to get rehab, workout, hit and/or throw, because we all know that we can’t afford to be taking days off while our competition is still working.

Now, to talk about an issue that is very important to all players – the walk up song. It is hard to find the one song that will put a player in the right state of mind as he walks up to the plate. The process of selecting a walkup song is very draining, and in fact it was too much for me. So, I enlisted the help of many friends and family members to suggest some songs I might be able to use. From the hundred or so suggestions I received from friends and family members, I was able to narrow it down to five finalists. Now, I need your help again to vote for one of the finalists on the poll here on the website (on the right side of this page, in fact!) Your votes are very important because I need a song here in the next few days, since our season starts in five days.

I won’t drag this out any longer and take time away for your internet surfing. So, I will end it on this note: We have worked hard to get where we are right now, but now we need your help and support at all of our games to help us get to where we’re going…OMAHA!

See everyone at the games this weekend.

Patrick Long

Don’t forget to vote for my walkup song and keep spreading the GOOD WORD…
