THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman shortstop Connor Justus has been name the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for hitting. 471 as the Yellow Jackets went 4-1 last week.
Justus paced the offense with a pair of home runs, a pair of doubles and a team-high eight RBIs during the Jackets’ 4-1 week that included a series victory over No. 1 Florida State. Justus slugged a team-best .941 for the week.
Ranked 25th this week by Baseball America, Georgia Tech (23-14, 10-8) has won eight of its last nine and hosts Georgia Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
A look at Justus’ week:
Tues. vs. Georgia Southern (W, 13-2): First career home run
Wed. vs. Savannah State (W, 12-1): 3-for-5, career-high four RBI, solo HR, 3-run double
Fri. vs. #1 Florida State (W, 5-3): Two-run single in first inning that gave Tech a 5-0 lead
Sat. vs. #1 Florida State (W, 12-4): 2-for-4, double, two runs
Sun. vs. #1 Florida State (L, 4-5): Bases-loaded walk in first inning, single off Jameis Winston in ninth
The Cartersville, Ga., native also extended his errorless streak to 20 games and helped turn three of Georgia Tech’s five double plays last week. Two of the double plays came in the Friday and Saturday wins over FSU and ended Seminole innings in which the bases were loaded.
Justus owns a six-game hitting streak and his .313 batting average ranks 18th in the ACC and is the third best by a freshman.
He is the first Tech freshman to be named the ACC’s Player of the Week since former OF Kyle Wren in 2011.
