The Yellow Jackets arrived in San Francisco on Christmas Eve at approximately 7 p.m. local time, in time to begin to explore the city. The team is headquartered at the San Francisco Marriott, which is right in the heart of the downtown area.
On Christmas Day, the team held a Christmas service, organized by chaplain Derrick Moore. Moore is familiar with the Bay area, having spent one season (1995) of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49’ers. He called upon one of the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes representatives, Clay Elliott, and Clay and his wife and children participated in the service.
Another presentation was by former 49’ers All-Pro offensive lineman Guy McIntyre, Moore’s former teammate who is also active with FCA. McIntyre is a native of Thomasville, Ga., where one of his high school coaches was the father of former Tech quarterback Shawn Jones. Of course, McIntyre went on to play at Georgia . . . Jackets and Bulldogs together – it must be Christmas!!
Other highlights included a duet by seniors Chris Reis and Gavin Tarquinio, who sang and played the guitar, and a solo by Erreka Reed, the daughter of administrative assistant Donna Reed who sang “Ave Maria.”
After Sunday’s day off, the Jackets will get back to work Monday morning with a workout at nearby San Francisco City College.
