Causey Shares ACC Player of the Week Honor

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Matt Causey and Duke’s DeMarcus Nelson were named Co-ACC Players of the Week while NC State’s J.J. Hickson was selected as ACC Rookie of the Week.

Causey scored 18 points each in back-to-back ACC road wins last week over NC State and Virginia. In Tech’s 92-82 win over Virginia Sunday, the Gainesville, Ga., senior scored 12 of his 18 points in overtime, including nine in a row at one point as the Yellow Jackets won their second straight ACC road game. On the week, Causey was 13-for-21 (.619) from the floor while averaging 18.0 points, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

On the heels of a 30-point game in a win against Virginia Tech on Jan. 19, Matt Causey scored 18 points each in a pair of ACC road wins for Georgia Tech last week, helping the Yellow Jackets build a three-game winning streak and even their conference record at 3-3.

Causey went 7-for-10 from the floor with five assists, four steals and one turnover Wednesday in the Yellow Jackets’ 77-74 win at NC State. The 6-0 senior scored 12 of his points in the second half as Tech rallied from a six-point deficit.

Sunday at Virginia, Causey scored 12 of his 18 points in overtime as the Yellow Jackets outscored the Cavaliers, 16-6, in the extra period for a 92-82 win. He scored nine straight points at one point in the extra period, hitting a 3-pointer, driving around Sean Singletary for a layup, adding a long 3-pointer from right in front of his bench and a free throw for Tech. After going scoreless in the first half as the Jackets fell behind by 10, he scored six points in the second half. For the game, he was 6-for-11 with a pair of threes and five assists.

For the week, Causey went 13-for-21 from the floor (61.9 pct.) and 3-for-8 from three-point range. He had 10 assists and five steals.

Tech is off until Saturday, when it hosts Maryland at 12 noon at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in a game to be televised nationally on ESPN2.
