Carpenter Receives Senior Bowl Invite

THE FLATS – Defensive back Tariq Carpenter (Ludowici, Ga./Long Country) became Georgia Tech’s first Senior Bowl invite in five years on Thursday when he added to the roster for college football’s most prominent all-star game, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5 in Mobile, Ala.

Carpenter is the first Yellow Jacket invited to participate in the Senior Bowl since Justin Thomas was selected to participate in the 2017 edition of the contest. Carpenter will be Georgia Tech’s 59th Senior Bowl participant since the game began in 1950.

In five seasons as a Yellow Jacket (2017-21), Carpenter appeared in 52 games, including 41 starts at safety, and finished his career with 223 tackles and four interceptions. Earlier this month, he had an interception in the Hula Bowl all-star game, which was played in Orlando.

Carpenter has been assigned to the American team for next week’s Senior Bowl, which will be coached by Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and his staff. The Senior Bowl is a week-long opportunity for National Football League Draft prospects to showcase their talent and connect with coaches and decision-makers from all 32 NFL teams. More than 55 Pro Football Hall of Famers have played in the Senior Bowl and the list of former game MVPs includes Dan Marino, LaDanian Tomlinson, Dak Prescott and Justin Herbert.

Senior Bowl week includes three practices, which will be held from Tuesday, Feb. 1-Thursday, Feb. 3 (the American team will practice from 3-5 p.m. ET all three days), and culminates with the 73rd annual Senior Bowl game, which will kick off at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 5 and be televised nationally on NFL Network.

Carpenter is one of five Yellow Jackets selected to participate in postseason all-star games this year, which is Georgia Tech’s most since eight Jackets accepted all-star game invites following the 2013 campaign. In addition to Carpenter, Tech’s all-star game participants include OL Devin Cochran (East-West Shrine Bowl – Feb. 3 in Las Vegas), WR Kyric McGowan (Tropical Bowl – Jan. 15 in Orlando), DB Tre Swilling (NFLPA Collegiate Bowl – Saturday in Pasadena, Calif.) and DB Juanyeh Thomas (East-West Shrine Bowl).
