ATLANTA – Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton has been named the 2007 ACC Coach of the Year for Women’s Tennis, as announced by the league office Thursday morning. Also earning conference accolades are senior Alison Silverio, junior Kristi Miller and freshman Amanda Craddock, who have all been named to the 2007 All-ACC Women’s Tennis Team
Shelton’s honor marks the third time the eighth-year head coach has received the accolade, and second time over the last three years. An All-American on the Flats from 1985-88, Shelton returned to his alma mater as the head coach for women’s tennis in July, 1999, and has guided the program to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last seven years, three ACC Regular Season titles (2005, 2006, 2007), and two ACC Championships (2005, 2006). With a 130-62 record in eight years, Shelton has more wins than other coach in the history of the program.
With three players tabbed to this year’s all-conference team, there have been a total of 13 all-ACC honorees since Shelton’s arrival in 1999. Miller becomes just the second player to have been named to the all-conference team on three occasions, while Silverio has received the honor for the second time in her career. Both players have been an integral part of the Yellow Jackets’ success over the last three years, as Miller is the Yellow Jackets’ all-time leader in singles victories (110) while Silverio stands atop Tech’s career doubles wins list with 94 in her four years on the Flats.
Craddock has been virtually unstoppable in her rookie campaign, posting a sterling 18-2 mark in dual matches and a stunning 29-8 (.784) overall record in 2007. She went 9-0 at the No. 3 singles position and teams with Silverio to form the nation’s 58th-ranked doubles tandem.
Silverio, Miller and Craddock now look to lead the team in defense of their 2005 and 2006 ACC Championship titles as the Yellow Jackets begin conference tournament play Friday at 12 noon.
