Brooks Named Burlsworth Trophy Nominee

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech defensive lineman Djimon Brooks (Sandersville, Ga./Washington County) is one of 88 official nominees for the 2021 Burlsworth Trophy. The Burlsworth Trophy is awarded annually to college football’s most outstanding player that began his collegiate career as a walk-on.

Brooks came to Georgia Tech in 2016 as an un-recruited walk-on. After seeing action in just one game over his first three seasons with the Yellow Jackets, he emerged as a key contributor at defensive tackle in 2019 and has appeared in all 30 of the Jackets’ games over the past three seasons. He has made 20 starts, including all eight this season, and has served as a game captain eight times over the past two campaigns.

Prior to the 2020 season, Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins presented Brooks with the jersey No. 0 (making him the first Yellow Jacket to ever wear the number), in recognition of his hard work and development after having “zero stars and zero offers” as a high school prospect. During the same presentation, Collins announced that Brooks had been awarded a full athletic scholarship.

It is the second-straight year that Brooks has been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy. He is seeking to become the second Yellow Jacket to win the award. Georgia Tech center (and current Georgia Tech Sports Network football radio analyst) Sean Bedford won the first-ever Burlsworth Award in 2010.

Brooks graduated from Georgia Tech in May 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Brooks and the Yellow Jackets visit Miami (Fla.) this Saturday for their final ACC Coastal Division showdown of the season. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. and will be televised on ACC RSN (In Atlanta: Bally Sports South – full list of regional networks available HERE).
