Steven Blackwood and Caitlin Lever were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, May 15, 2006.
Blackwood, a senior from Roswell, Ga., hit .389 with three home runs and nine RBI to lead Georgia Tech to a 3-1 record last week against Georgia and Duke. Blackwood added two doubles and scored seven runs while posting a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .450 on base percentage. On Thursday vs. Georgia, Blackwood hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to send the game into extra innings. On Friday in Tech’s 7-6, 10-inning win against Duke, Blackwood hit two home runs — a solo shot to lead off the first inning, and a three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning that tied the game at 6-6.
Lever, a junior from Amherst, NY, led the Yellow Jackets to a third-place finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Tournament. Lever tied a tournament record with two home runs in a single game, blasting a grand slam and a solo home run in consecutive at bats against No. 6 seed Virginia in an elimination game to lead Tech to an 11-2 victory over the Cavaliers in five innings. She led the tournament with five runs scored, finished second with six runs batted in and third with two home runs. Lever’s .400 batting average for the week was ninth as the Jackets finished 3-2 in the championship.
