INDIANAPOLIS – Redshirt senior Shayla Bivins has been nominated for the 2014 Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Team for her outstanding dedication to leadership and helping others.
The Allstate WBCA NABC Good Works Team honors players at all levels of college basketball who represent the sport’s finest in the areas of leadership and charitable achievements amongst their peers. The student-athletes nominated for this prestigious award embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back.
Out of the 202 nominees for the Good Works Team, specific voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA® Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA® Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of the Good Works Team will be announced in February.
Bivins, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., has aspirations to go to law school following her final year at Georgia Tech. She is the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board and is the Student Government Association Athletic Representative.
This semester she has gotten a behind-the-scenes look at how the Georgia Tech Athletic Association runs as she interns with various departments such as the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, compliance, ticketing and human resource offices. Bivins spearheaded the inaugural Georgia Tech Donor Appreciation Week in the beginning of November. During the donor week, Bivins organized a “Thank-a-thon” where Yellow Jacket student-athletes made phone calls and wrote letters showing their appreciation to all of the supporters of Georgia Tech athletics.
Bivins has aided the Jackets in various community service initiatives including the Jacket-to-Jacket reading program, Girls on the Run and the Atlanta Two-Day Breast Cancer Walk. She was elected one of three captains of the 2013-14 Yellow Jackets.
On the court, Bivins has had a great start to her final season as a Yellow Jacket. The center has started every game so far and is averaging 3.8 points per game and a team-high 1.0 blocks per game. Most recently, Bivins was named to the LIU Turkey Classic All-Tournament Team after scoring six points in the championship game while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out a team-high five assists.
Bivins and the Yellow Jackets host Illinois in the ACC Big/Ten Challenge tomorrow. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion.
