Oct. 22, 2016

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis senior Carlos Benito advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championships on Saturday with wins over Georgia’s Alex Phillips and Florida’s Joseph Guillin. The senior will take on Georgia’s Wayne Montgomery on Sunday morning. Andrew Li fell in the second round to Aziz Dougaz (Florida State), 7-6(5), 6-3.

In a back draw consolation match, Phillip Gresk topped Florida’s Stephen Madonia, 6-7(5), 7-5, 10-7.

In the consolation draw, freshman Chris Yun advanced with wins over Miami’s Max Andrew and Florida Gulf Coast’s Javier Fernandez. Daniel Yun grabbed a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win over Florida Atlantic’s Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff before falling to South Florida’s Vadym Kalyuzhnyy, 6-2, 6-7(6), 10-6. Cole Fiegel tallied two wins for the Jackets with a 6-4, 6-4 outing over Georgia Southern’s Casablancas and a 6-1, 6-3 rout of Stetson’s Ball. Elijah Melendez topped Georgia State’s Acuna, 6-7, 6-1(6) before dropping his next match to South Florida’s Sasha Gozun, 6-2, 7-6(5). Michael Kay fell to Florida’s Johannes Ingildsen, 6-3, 7-5.

Doubles Update: Andrew Li and Michael Kay advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw with a narrow 8-6 defeat of South Florida’s No. 12-ranked doubles pairing Gozun and Kalyuzhnyy. Melendez and Benito fell to Florida’s Perez-Blanco and Lipman in a close match, 8-7(5). The Yun brothers were topped another Florida pairing of Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen, 8-4.

Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “We did a better job competing and executing in singles today. Carlos did a good job closing out a tough opponent in straight sets. He is getting stronger as the tournament progresses. Phillip had a great match mentally. He was able to handle some adversity and come from behind to win his match. Mike and Andrew stayed in control of their doubles match against a good team and got the win. We lost our other two doubles matches because of some correctable execution errors, but we were looking to play the right way.”
