TAMPA, Fla. – Junior Avery Bartlett didn’t disappoint in the 800m quarterfinals, running a 1:47.92 to qualify for Nationals at the 2018 NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday afternoon at the USF Track & Field Stadium.
Finishing almost a second faster than his prelim time, the ACC 800m Champion finished fifth overall in the quarterfinals to receive the automatic bid to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Championships, joining teammate 10K qualifier Nahom Solomon. The outdoor qualification is the second-straight for Bartlett. Including NCAA Indoors, it will be the four-consecutive Nationals for him after first qualifying for 2017 Indoors.
The Yellow Jackets also saw great strides out of its 100m hurdles team on Friday. Jeanine Williams led Tech by finishing second overall with a season-best time of 12.74w – her second-straight wind-aided time below the school record. Also moving on to Saturday’s quarterfinals is senior Kenya Collins, who finished with a season-best time of 13.33w (23rd). Just missing qualification was senior Raven Stewart, who also turned in an impressive season-best effort, running a 13.42.
All-ACC selection senior Hailey Gollnick then took on the 3000m steeplechase. She finished 14th in her heat, turning in a time of 10:48.46. Meanwhile in the pole vault, senior Ksenia Novikova had her streak of consecutive 4.00-meter clearances snapped, missing qualification with a mark of 3.78 meters.
The NCAA East Regionals concludes on Saturday, May 25. Tech’s events will begin at 1:50 p.m. as Williams and Collins battle in the 100m hurdles quarterfinal, before the Jackets run the men’s 4x400m relay race at 3:55 p.m. Regionals and the day are capped at 8:05 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. as the men’s (Solomon) and women’s 5K (Nicole Fegans) closes out the weekend.
