COLUMBUS, Ga. – Junior Kristen Adkins tossed a one-hit shutout and redshirt senior Jen Yee hit a solo home run as the No. 11/8 Georgia Tech Softball team (10-1) beat UCF (5-6), 1-0, Friday in the opening game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Adkins threw just 65 pitches and only 16 of them were balls. She did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Yee’s home run came with two outs in the third inning as she ripped a 1-0 pitch by UCF’s Ashleigh Cole deep over the fence in right-center field. It was her sixth home run of the season and extended her hitting streak to 11 games. That would be all the offense Adkins would need as she was mowing down the Knights all afternoon. Her only blemish was a clean single by Hillary Barrow leading off the sixth inning. Adkins also hit a batter. After the four strikeouts, 16 of the 17 batters she retired came via a ground ball.
Cole was equally as impressive foe UCF. Besides the Yee home run, the only other hit she allowed was a bloop single off the bat of junior Kristine Priebe. Following the Yee home run, Cole retired 13of the final 14 batters she faced.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action again tonight against Nebraska at 6:30 p.m. as the NFCA Leadoff Classic continues through Sunday. The Yellow Jackets also have games coming up against Arkansas (Saturday at 11:00 a.m.), No. 18/20 Louisiana Lafayette (Saturday at 6:30 p.m.) and Iowa (Sunday at 10:00 a.m.).
