GREENSBORO, N.C. – Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John D. Swofford has announced that six players from Georgia Tech and Maryland will serve suspensions for actions during the Georgia Tech-Maryland baseball game at College Park, Sunday, April 14.
Sunday’s game, which was the final game of a three-game series between the two teams, was in the bottom of the seventh inning when the game was halted by the umpires following a bench clearing altercation that occurred at home plate. The game resulted in a 12-1 Georgia Tech victory in accordance with the NCAA rules.
In accordance to NCAA rule 5-16, three players have been automatically issued suspensions based on the umpires’ report that was submitted to the NCAA following the game. Serving a three-game suspension is Georgia Tech’s Matt Murton, while Tyler Parker of Georgia Tech and Ray Gemmill of Maryland will each serve one-game suspensions.
Also, Swofford handed down three additional suspensions after consultation with conference officials who viewed video of the incident. Serving one-game suspensions will be Georgia Tech’s Mike Andreas, Matthew Boggs and Maryland’s Kyle George. All six players will begin serving their suspensions immediately.
“The Atlantic Coast Conference will continue to make sportsmanship a priority,” said Swofford. “We cannot tolerate this unacceptable behavior and we will continue to promote adherence to the league’s code of conduct as stated in the ACC Manual. These suspensions are a direct result of breaking that code and I hope this action will serve as a message to both players and coaches.”
