#37 Yellow Jackets Upend #30 Wake Forest

April 3, 2005

David North sealed the 4-3 victory for No. 37 Georgia Tech (10-7, 2-4 ACC) over No. 30 Wake Forest (12-5, 4-3 ACC) in a back and forth match at the Bill Moore Tennis Center, to give the Yellow Jackets their second Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season.

In doubles action, Wake Forest took an early 1-0 lead as Marko Rajevac and North fell 8-2 to the team of Derrick Spice and Brett Ross at No.1 doubles and Noah Tyler and Scott Blackmon fell 8-2 to Wake’s Marius Adamski and Andrew Hamar at the No.3 doubles position. Jose Luis Muguruza and Sukhwa Young battled back in No. 2 doubles winning 8-6 over the team of Joe Bates and Todd Paul, but the point had already been decided.

In singles, Zachary Rath pulled the Jackets even from the No. 4 position by upsetting #79 Hamar 6-1, 6-4. George Gvelesiani then put Georgia Tech up 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Wake Forest’s Charles Sartor at No. 6 singles. Ross evened things at 2-2 for the Demon Deacons with a 6-3, 6-5 win over Rajevac at the No. 3 position.

Jordan Delass won at No. 5 singles to put the Jackets back up 3-2 when he beat Adamski 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Before North’s win over Spice sealed the match for the Jackets from the No. 2 spot, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In No. 1 singles Paul defeated Muguruza 6-2, 7-6 (4), 6-3, after the Jackets had already clinched the match.

“We really rose to the occasion and played great singles.” Said coach Kenny Thorne, “Wake Forest has a tough line-up from top to bottom and they really pushed us, but our singles play turned it into one of the better performances of the season.”

The win improves the Jackets to 10-7 overall and 2-4 in the ACC, while the loss drops Wake Forest to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. The Jackets will be in action next Friday, April 8, when they visit Maryland. Tech will return to the Bill Moore Tennis center on April 15, to host North Carolina State.
