THE FLATS – The #27-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (11-8, 8-5 ACC) suffered a 6-1 loss to #7 North Carolina (23-3, 12-1 ACC) on Thursday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
“We played #7 North Carolina today and they have a really good team,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “We were up on courts one and three, 7-4, in doubles but we couldn’t quite close it down on number one doubles. We won at number three. We have to get ready to play Duke. I’m happy with the way our team has come along and hopefully we can put forth a really good effort on Saturday against Duke.”
The Yellow Jackets lost the doubles point for only the eighth time this season. The Jacket freshmen duo of Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Rasheeda McAdoo cruised to an 8-5 victory against Hayley Carter and Tessa Lyons at the number three spot.
It was a tight match between #4 Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey and #15 Whitney Kay and Caroline Price on court one. Kurey and Woodard held a 7-4 lead against Kay and Price, before the Tar heel duo won three-straight games to tie it up, 7-7. Price and Kay then edged the Tech tandem, 7-3, in the tiebreaker to win the match.
After trailing 6-0 to Jamie Loeb and Ashley Dai, Natasha Prokhnevska and Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer fought back to make it 6-3 on court two. Loeb and Dai then went on to win the match, 8-3, and clinch the doubles point for the Tar Heels.
“At one stage, we were up a break on courts four, five and six in singles,” Harmon said. “We wound up winning four but we lost the first sets in the breaker at five and six. We lost a very tight 6-1 match to a very good team.”
During singles play, Prokhnevska suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to #46 Prince. North Carolina took a 3-0 lead against the Jackets after #1-ranked Loeb defeated Woodard, 6-3, 6-2 on court one. On court two, #6 Carter captured a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Kurey to clinch the match for the Tar Heels.
McAdoo defeated Kay in straight sets to capture Tech’s only point of the match. McAdoo took set one by a score of 6-2 before winning set two, 6-4.
On court six, Anton-Ohlmeyer battled it out with Kate Vialle in set one. With the score tied at 6-6, Vialle won the tiebreaker, 7-3, to win the set. Vialle then went on to win set two, 6-1. Wacker was also edged in a tiebreaker in her first set against #103 Ashley Dai on court five, falling 7-6 (7-2). Wacker lost set two to Dai, 6-4.
The Jackets will hold its final home match of the regular season on Saturday when they welcome #1 Duke at noon. Prior to the match, senior Muriel Wacker will be honored during a Senior Day ceremony.
