2004 Buzz Classic |
Connecticut and Minnesota shared the Buzz Classic Championship this afternoon as both teams went unscaffed in the tournament (6-0) at the 12th annual Buzz Classic Softball Tournament. UConn crusied in its semifinal game, 7-0, over NC State, while the Golden Gophers needed extra innings to defeat Nicholls State, 4-3 (10). The tournament was shortened due to time constraints.

No. 5 seed North Carolina defeated 12th-seeded Western Kentucky, 5-1, in the first round of tournament play. The Tar Heels were led by Jessica Young who went 2-for-3 in the game. Alison Yin threw a complete game, allowing eight hits and one earned run.

Tara Knudsen went 3-for-3, with a home run and four runs batted in and Jessica Sallinger pitched four shutout innings to down the Cyclones, 11-0, in the first round of bracket play. Sallinger improves to 17-3 on the season.

Despite not allowing an earned run, the Georgia Tech softball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Connecticut in the first quarterfinal of the Buzz Classic. The Huskies took advantage of three errors by the Jackets and cashed in with three hits in the inning to plate five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tech crawled within one in the sixth, but was unable to tie the game in the seventh inning.

The Wolfpack pulled off the upset in the second quarterfinal game of the morning with a 2-1 decision over the Bowling Green Falcons. NC State scored two runs in the third inning and Ervin (4.1) threw four strong innings for the win, while Shephard (2.2) picked up the save to hold the Falcons off the scoreboard.

Nicholls State continued to blank opponents in the Buzz Classic as pitcher Dione Meier fired her second shutout of the tournament, shutting down the Tar Heel attack with 13 strikeouts. Meier scattered three hits, while teammates Lindsey Coleman and Jodi Rubin each homered to supply the offense.

The Golden Gophers made short work of the Cougars, scoring two runs in the first inning, three in the third inning and four more in the sixth to ice the College of Charleston, 9-1 (5), in quarterfinal #3. Nanchy finished 3-for-4, with two RBIs, while Smith went 2-for-4,w ith three RBIs for the Golden Gophers.

Connecticut eliminated its second ACC opponent of the day with a 7-0 shutout win over NC State in the first semifinal game of the Buzz Classic. UConn’s Jessica Gurney vaulted the Huskies into the title game with a complete-game shutout, scattering three hits and striking out 10.

The Golden Gophers won a tight ballgame over Nicholls State, 4-3, in the 10th inning on a wild throw down to third base which allowed the runner to come home and score the winning run. Marten picked up the win in relief for the Gophers, throwing the final three innings, striking out three.

College of Charleston 3, Florida A&M 1
College of Charleston’s Darcy Johnson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the Cougars past Florida A&M, 3-1, in opening action of the Buzz Classic. The Cougars’ Rachel Stern threw a complete game, scattering four hits, one unearned run and struck out seven.

GSU’s Candace Jones singled to center field to plate the winning run for the Lady Panthers as Andria McNary struck out a season-high 15 batters to give Georgia State a 2-1 win in extra innings.

The Hilltoppers tallied four runs in the second inning and six more in the third inning to trounce the Lady Govs, 10-0, in five innings. WKU’s Adrienne Lathrop tossed a one-hitter, striking out eight.

UConn got seven strong innings from Michelle Caouette as the Huskies defeated Miami University, 2-0, at the Buzz Classic. The Huskies’ Mandy Schettni led the UConn bats, going 2-for-3 in the game.

Middle Tennessee State 5, Georgia Southern 1
MTSU pushed across three runs in the fourth inning to cruise to a 5-1 victory of the Eagles in the opening game for both teams in the Buzz Classic. The Blue Raiders’ Jennifer Dorais picked up the win in the circle, throwing four innings, allowing two hits, one earned run and struck out one.

Nicholls State’s Dione Meier threw a no-hitter and struck out 15 Hilltoper batters as the Colonels defeated Western Kentucky, 2-0, at the Buzz Classic.

Iowa State 4, Mercer 2
Iowa State jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings and was able to hold on for the 4-2 win. Misty Kimura led the way offensively for Iowa State, going 2-for-3 in the game with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Iowa State got seven solid innings from Alyssa Ransom, giving up only one earned run while striking out six.

Connecticut 8, North Carolina (Greensboro) 2
UNC Greensboro committed six errors in the game that led to five unearned runs for Connecticut as UConn cruised to a 8-2 victory. UConn got a stellar performance from Jessica Gurney, allowing just one earned run while striking out eight.

Troy State 2, Ball State 0
Troy State survived a serious threat from Ball State in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 2-0. Ball State had runners on second and third with just one out in that inning but Troy State’s Laine Harcourt was able to get the final two outs to secure the shutout and the victory for Ball State. Tamra Howren hit a home run and knocked in both runs for Troy State. Rachel Cleveland pitched well in the loss for Ball State, allowing just one earned run while scattering seven hits.

Bowling Green 6, NC State 2
After giving up two quick runs in the top of the first, Bowling Green stormed back with six unanswered runs of their own to defeat NC State 6-2.

Senior Erin Voeltz struck out a school record (7 innings) 16, finishing with a one-hitter as the No. 21 Georgia Tech softball team defeated Austin Peay, 3-1, in the opening game of the Buzz Classic for the Yellow Jackets. Senior Tara Knudsen was perfect offensively for Tech, going 3-for-3, with a home run and one run batted in.

This game was tied at 1-1 until Minnesota was able to plate one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to support a sterling effort by Minnesota’s pitcher Piper Marten. Piper struck out thirteen batters and five of the last six that she faced.

North Carolina 6, Georgia Southern 1
The Tar Heels hit a season-high three home runs, as they powered past Georgia Southern 6-1. Dionne Streete, Emily Price and Jessica Young all went deep for Carolina and Crystal Cox pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out eight. Sam Steiner hit a home run in the sixth inning for Georgia Southern’s only run.

Miami (Ohio) 5, UNC Wilmington 1
With the help of two Seahawk errors in the top of the seventh, Miami erupted for three insurance runs to break open what was a 2-1 at the point to win 5-1. Miami’s started the scoring off by plating a run in the third. UNCW’s Meghan Mulcahy evened things up in the fourth by belting a solo homer. Bella Garcia scored the go-ahead run in the 6th inning after leading off the inning with a single. Miami went on to score three in the seventh and secure the 5-1 victory.

Georgia State 2, Tulsa 1
Georgia State won their second cliffhanger of the day. Andrea McNary came in the fifth inning and pitched three scoreless innings to earn the save. This came in the same day in which she struck out fifteen in Georgia State’s earlier game. After GSU’s Susan Lanier hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to put the Panthers up 2-0, Tulsa fought back to 2-1 in the bottom of fifth and put up a furious charge in the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Hurricane loaded the bases with two outs, but Andrea McNary was upto the challenge and struck out Katie Torres to end the game. McNary struck out seven in three innings of work in this game and twenty-two total on the day.

Georgia Tech 7, Ohio 3
The 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets smashed three home runs in the first three innings to jump out in front of Ohio 7-0 and held on to defeat the Bobcats 7-3 at the Buzz Classic tonight. Senior Soraya Reddick and sophomores Amy Hosier and Lauren Schlechte each homered for the Jackets. Tech improves to 26-5, while Ohio falls to 4-12.

Troy State 3, Middle Tennessee 0
The Trojans closed out their second shutout of the day. After shutting out Ball State earlier, Michelle Grinage was able to go the distance while scattering ten hits. It was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Troy State plated two runs and added another insurance run in the sixth.

Coastal Carolina 13, UNC Wilmington 3
Coastal Carolina dominated the Seahawks in this game. Coastal Carolina was up 3-0 entering the top of the fourth and exploded for ten runs to blow the game open to 13-0. Diana Mendez was the offensive star, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. To UNC Wilmington’s credit, they battled as best as they could and put up 3 three runs including a pinch-hit home run by Christy Ross before the five inning mercy rule ended the game.

North Carolina State 3, Eastern Illinois 2 (9 innings)
NC State won a thriller in the longest game of the day so far by scoring in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Eastern Illinois 3-2. NC State started quickly with single runs in the first and second innings. However, the Panthers battled back to even up the score at 2-2 in their half of the fifth inning. The Wolfpack’s Carla Shepherd pitched two scoreless, extra innings to earn her first win of the season.

Iowa State 7, Florida A&M 5
Iowa State won their second game of the day with their victory over Florida A&M by storming back from a 5-0 deficit by scoring all seven of their runs in the top of sixth inning. Florida A&M threatened to rally back in the bottom of the sixth but were unable to plate any runs.

Nicholls State 10, Ohio 1
Nicholls State won their second game of the tournament with a 10-1 victory over Ohio University. Nicholls State pounded in six runs in the third and three in the fourth to blow open what was a 1-1 game. Leah Peterson, Brandi Hahn, and Kristi Blanchard all contributed two hits a piece for Nicholls State. Brandi Hahn went deep once, doubled and had three RBIs in the contest. Blanchard doubled and knocked in four to help end the game by fifth inning.

North Carolina joined the list of two time winners on the day with 8-0 victory over Ball State in 5 innings. Emily Price led the Tar Heels offensively, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Allsion Yin and Ashley Allen combined to complete two hit shutout for UNC.

Coastal Carolina exploded for five first run innings and held on to win their second game of the day with a 6-4 victory over UNC Greensboro. CCU’s Sara Hostetler led the charge offensively, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Danyelle Gerdts collected the first save of her collegiate career and Brittany Nelson picked up the win to improve to 3-6 on the season.

Bowling Green 1, Tulsa 0
Bowling Green won a pitcher’s duel 1-0 over Tulsa. Lindsey Porter provided the only run that Bowling Green would need by going deep in the fifth inning. Liz Vrabel scattered five hits over seven innings with six strikeouts to secure the shutout. Ami Day pitched well in the loss for Tulsa.

Minnesota banged out 11 hits and scored three runs in the second inning to roll past Mercer, 8-1, in the final game of the Buzz Classic tonight. Valerie Alston went 2-for-4, with a double and two runs batted in to lead the Gopher attack. Pitcher Lynn Peyer tossed a complete-game, scattering six hits, one earned run and struck out 10.

The Hilltoppers posted an 11-run win courtesy of 11 runs in the fourth inning to down Ohio this morning. After the Eagles jumped out in front by a score of 4-0, Troy State responded with three unanswered runs to cut the deficit to one after five innings. Neither team managed a run in the sixth inning and the Eagles plated an insurance run in the seventh to down the Trojans, 6-4. Cary Moone picked up the win for GSU, while Tiffany Urena threw two perfect innings of relief to record the save. Shanita Black led the offense, going 3-for-4. GSU (1-2), TSU (2-1).

UConn jumped on the Chanticleers 4-0 in the first inning and never looked back, tallying three runs in the third and five more in the sixth inning to defeat Coastal Carolina, 12-3 (6), this morning. THe Huskies pounded out 11 hits in the game and were led by Mandy Schettini, Stephanie DiBiase and Suzy de Bary, each driving in two runs in the game. UConn (3-0), CCU (2-1).

In a seasaw battle, Ball State rallied back late in the game to overcome an 8-2 deficit, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and adding two more in the sixth to down the Blue Raiders, 10-8. Randi Freese picked up the win in relief for the Cardinals, pitching three innings, scattering five hits and did not allow a run. BSU (1-2), MTSU (1-2).

After walking eight times in the first inning and scoring five runs, Mercer had to hold off the Lady Rattlers who mounted a valiant rally with four runs in the fifth inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears strongholded FAMU, 7-6. Kerri Ryskamp went 2-for-2, with two walks and one RBI to lead Mercer offensively. Mercer (1-2), FAMU (0-3).

Nicholls State’s Dione Meier won a pitcher’s duel over senior Erin Voletz, 2-1, this afternoon to end Tech’s eight-game winning streak at the Buzz Classic. Brandi Huhn homered in the third inning to lift the Colonels (13-12) over the 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets (25-6). Voeltz (10-3) went the distance, scattering six hits and struck out nine. With a 7-3 lead after five innings, the Tar Heels let their lead slip away as Middle Tennessee State tallied six runs in the top of the sixth inning, only to witness another comeback against them in the bottom half of the inning as Carolona won a 10-9 battle. UNCG’s Vanessa Massie went 3-for-4, with a home run and drove in a run as the Spartans upended its rival UNC Wilmington, 6-3, at the Buzz Classic. Bowling Green slugged 18 hits and scored 12 runs to trounce Georgia State, 12-0, this afternoon at Al Bishop Softball Complex. The Falcons’ Gina Rango was a a perfect 4-for-4, with six runs batted in and teammate Jody Johnson pitched a shutout, striking out eight in the win. (BGSU (4-0), GSU (2-2).

Charleston 11, Mercer 3
College of Charleston rallied from three runs down to defeat Mercer, 11-3, this afternoon in tournament action. The Cougars scored seven runs in the last inning and had 15 hits in the ballgame. Amanda Cone finished 3-for-5 to lead CoC offensively.

Ohio’s Kelly Rodriguez hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bobcats a 2-0 win against Austin Peay. Katlyn Mallette and Natalie Armstrong combined for a shutout on the mound for Ohio. Ohio (1-3), Austin Peay (0-4).

The Tar Heels rallied late to tie the game in the sixth inning with two runs to send the game into extra innings where Carolina won, 5-4. The Heels win Pool 2 with the win and will play Western Kentucky in the first round of bracket play. UNC (4-0), TSU (2-2).

In a must win for the Chaticleers, Becca Garcia drove in the winning run in the fourth inning as Coastal Carolina advanced to bracket competition, 2-1, with a win over Miami University.
