Zachary Rath Leads Men's Tennis Team at Crimson Tide Fall Invitational

Despite a nearly three-hour rain delay, Zachary Rath won the first two rounds in singles action to lead the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team at the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational on Friday.

Rath posted a straight set (6-4, 6-3) win Jan Zelezny of Colorado in his first match and followed it with a 6-4, 7-5 win over fourth-seeded Tony Hearle of Rice to advance to the Quarterfinals of the Flight A bracket. Rath will now face Alabama’s Javier Bes Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Also in the Flight A bracket, senior Marko Rajevac dropped two matches. In his first match, Rajevac lost to Dias Doskaravev of South Alabama and then fell in the Consolation bracket to Seo Jae Chang from Hampton, 7-5, 7-6 (3).

In the Flight B bracket, Jordan Delass defeated Jacksonville State’s Jean Vaccarin and then recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mark Gellard of South Alabama to move into the Quarterfinals on Saturday. In addition, Scott Blackmon posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Andre Maier from UAB. Late in the evening, he faced Claudio Christen from the University of Arizona but results were not known. Teammate George Gvelesiani lost his first match of the day to Colorado’s Peter Bjork by the scores of 6-2, 6-2 and then later in the day won a match over Christian Rybertt (6-2, 6-3) in the consolation bracket to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In doubles action, Delass and Gvelesiani’s match against Adrian Tollstam and Ryan Valentine of UAB was played late Friday night and results were not known.

Action at the Crimson Tide Fall Tournament will continue on Saturday and results will be available on www.ramblinwreck.com.
