DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Elizabeth Kilborn earned singles and doubles wins Friday to lead the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team on the first day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
The Yellow Jackets played Friday’s matches at Duke’s Ambler Tennis Stadium and Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. This year’s tournament is splitting the field at Duke’s facilities and UNC’s Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center to accommodate the 12-team field.
Kilborn opened the day by teaming with sophomore Sasha Krupina to defeat NC State’s Berkeley Brock and Sandhya Nagaraj, 8-6. In Tech’s other doubles match, sophomores Lynn Blau and Hillary Davis defeated the Wolfpack duo of Daria Petrovic and Chloe Smith, 8-3.
In singles play, Kilborn won her lone match of day over Jackie Sperling of Minnesota, 6-1, 6-4. Davis also picked up a singles win when she defeated the Gophers Magdalena Wiecha, 6-3, 6-3.
“Our goal is to continue to get better through out this weekend’s tournament,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “As we finish out the fall season, we want to finish on a high note. One of the best parts of the day was watching Elizabeth back on the court in a competitive situation and playing so well.”
The Yellow Jackets will continue play Saturday at the Kitty Harrison Invitational at 9 a.m., when they play doubles against members of Virginia Tech followed by doubles matches against TCU. In the afternoon, the Jackets are scheduled to play singles against players from Maryland.
