ALPHARETTA, GA. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team earned three doubles wins and four singles wins on the final day of the 2011 Georgia Tech Invitational at the Windward Club in Alpharetta, Ga.
Junior Elizabeth Kilborn capped a very good weekend with a 6-1, 6-4 singles win over Georgia’s Lilly Kimbell. In her first two matches of the weekend, Kilborn did not lose a set and dropped only five total games. Kilborn and doubles teammate, senior Lynn Blau, claimed the doubles title with nine points and a 3-0 weekend with an 8-4 win over the Oklahoma State tandem of C.C. Sardinha and Malika Rose.
Sophomore Alex Anghelescu, ranked No. 81 in the Campbell/ITA Tennis preseason rankings, finished off a 3-0 weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Georgia’s Alina Jerjomina on Sunday. Anghelescu teamed with Yellow Jacket freshman Jasmine Minor to post an 8-2 win over the mixed team of Yale’s Elizabeth Epstein and Oklahoma State’s Leyla Simmons.
The 124th ranked Blau also ended the first weekend of the 2011 fall season with a 3-0 singles record after she defeated Georgia’s Rachael Hart 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday. Sophomore Muriel Wacker earned her second win of the weekend when she battled past Yale’s Stephanie Kent, 6-4, 7-6.
After suffering a defeat on Saturday, Tech’s sixth-ranked doubles team of Jillian O’Neill and Caroline Lilley responded with a decisive 8-4 win over the Cowgirls’ team of Mary Jeremiah and Meghan Blevins.
The Yellow Jackets are now off until the ITA/Riviera Women’s All-American Championships, which begin on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
