Yellow Jackets' Montgomery Named to Naismith Watch List

Nov. 9, 2010

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech senior Alex Montgomery has been named to the preseason Naismith Trophy watch list, as announced today by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

The Naismith Trophy is the nation’s most prestigious award presented annually to women’s college basketball’s player of the year. The recipient will be awarded on April 4, 2011, at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind.

“I am so excited that Alex Montgomery is finally receiving this type of recognition,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She is very deserving of this honor. It is great for Alex and for our program for her to be named to the Naismith watch list.”

Montgomery, a Tacoma, Wash., native is the leading returning scorer for the Yellow Jackets. She finished the 2009-10 season with 11.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 1.9 apg. Montgomery played in 28 of Tech’s 33 games last season, starting 13 contests. She missed five games during the season after suffering a knee injury in the 2009 ACC Tournament.

“I am extremely excited to be included on the Naismith Trophy watch list,” Montgomery said. “There are a lot of great players included. It is an opportunity for me to really show that I am a leader of our team by stepping up the consistency in my game and bringing energy to our team every day.”

Montgomery was named to the third team All-ACC for the second consecutive year last season and was also honored as the ACC Sixth Player of the Year. In league action she averaged 11.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg and over 2.0 apg. She scored in double digits in 20 of 28 games played

The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2010-11 college basketball season. In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club will announce its midseason list of the top 30 players and in March, it will narrow the list to four finalists.

Montgomery and the Yellow Jackets begin the 2010-11 campaign with four of their first five games at home. Tech will tip-off the season on Friday, Nov. 12, against Georgia State, before hitting the road to face perennial Colonial Athletic Association member Old Dominion in a 2 p.m. matchup on Nov. 14. The Yellow Jackets will return to Alexander Memorial Coliseum for games with Kennesaw State (No. 17), Prairie View A&M (Nov. 19) and two-time defending national champion Connecticut, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m.
