Yellow Jackets Head To Clemson For ACC Finale

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams look to get back on track this weekend as they travel to Clemson, S.C., for an Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet against the Clemson Tigers. The swimming meet will be held in the McHugh Natatorium and is set to begin at 2 p.m.

The Tech men enter Saturday’s meet with a record of 3-5, 2-2 ACC. Clemson owns an overall record of 11-2-1 and 2-1-1 in the conference. The Yellow Jacket women are 3-5, 1-2 ACC, while the Tiger women are 9-4, 0-3 ACC.

Ranking amongst the league leaders for the men are freshman Ryan Bishop (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), junior Matt Figh (Montgomery, Ala.), sophomore Sam Morgan (Gainesville, Ga.) and senior Eduardo Oliver (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Bishop carries three top-10 times for the Yellow Jackets. He currently stands sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.60), ninth in the 200 individual medley (1:52.07) and 10th in the 400 IM (4:00.78).

Figh has posted top-10 times in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. He stands sixth in the league with a time of 4:29.33 in the 500 free and ranks ninth in the conference with a time of 1:40.47 in the 200 free.

Morgan is the only male swimmer to tally a NCAA ‘B’ cut time this season, doing so at the Georgia Invitational on Dec. 6 in the 1650 free (15:31.18). He ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle events. He ranks fifth in the ACC in the 1650 free and 500 free (4:28.22) and sixth in the 1000 free (9:21.66).

Oliver currently owns top-10 marks in the distance freestyle events for Tech. His time of 9:27.57 in the 1000 free and time of 15:45.60 in the 1650 free rank him 10th in the conference.

Divers Tony Burkhardt (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Paul McCarty have both qualified for the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships on March 12-14. Burkhardt owns the league’s ninth best mark on the one-meter springboard (306.82), while McCarty tallied the 10th best mark on the one-meter board (297.60).

Ranking in the ACC for the women is freshman Vesna Stojanovska (Skopje, Macedonia). Stojanovska has three NCAA ‘B’ cut times for the Jackets in the 200 free (1:49.05), 500 free (4:53.76) and 200 butterfly (1:58.82). She holds the league’s top time in the 200 fly, stands second in the 200 free and sixth in the 500 free.

Junior Amy Sutton (Hoover, Ala.) and sophomore Laurissa Prystaj (Fairport, N.Y.) have both posted NCAA Zone Diving Championship scores for the Yellow Jackets and will compete for Tech at the diving meet on March 12.

The Rambling Wreck swimming and diving teams will host two meets next weekend to wrap up the 2003-04 dual meet schedule. The Jackets will take on Kentucky on Friday, Jan. 30 and Emory on Saturday, Jan. 31. Both meets will be held in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center and are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and Noon, respectively.
