SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (2-2) fought back from a 10-point second half deficit to force overtime against the Syracuse Orange (5-0) but fell 75-72 in both teams’ opener in the San Juan Shootout.
For the second straight game, junior Dawnn Maye was the Yellow Jackets leading scorer with a career-high. Against Syracuse, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native shot 50 percent for the game and finished with a game-high 26 points. It is Maye’s third career game with at least 20 points and her second this season. She added four rebounds, three steals and two assists, playing all but 27 seconds.
Senior Jasmine Blain played one of the best games of her career and finished with her first career double-double. The Atlanta native posted career-highs of 15 rebounds and 13 points. Sophomore Sydney Wallace added 10 points, while junior Tyaunna Marshall finished with 10 rebounds and nine points, narrowly missing her sixth career double-double.
Tech started the game hot, racing out to a 5-0 lead and held Syracuse without a field goal for the first three and a half minutes. The two teams traded scoring runs during the opening 10 minutes of the first half. Free throws were the difference in the first half as Syracuse made 15-of-19 in the first period and led 35-30 at the half.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind 46-36 at the five minutes into the second half, but Tech continued to fight back. Two Marshall free throws and a Brittany Jackson jumper gave Tech a 58-57 lead, its first since being up 18-17 midway through the first half.
After Tech and Syracuse traded baskets in the final 30 seconds of regulation, the Jackets forced an Orange turnover with 14.2 seconds to play. After the Yellow Jackets were unable to convert, Syracuse’s half-court heave at the buzzer went wide and Tech went to overtime for the first time this season.
Maye scored eight points in overtime, but the Orange made their free throws and the Jackets fell to 2-2 on the season.
