Yellow Jackets Drop Match to Auburn, 4-3

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis fell to Auburn, 4-3 on Friday.

Doubles action saw the No. 3 doubles pairing in the nation of Andres Martin and Marcus McDaniel jumping out to a fast start after they broke the first serve from Auburn. At 4-2, Martin was serving deuce point. A rocket serve led to an ace and a 5-2 lead. The match eventually got to 5-3 when Martin/McDaniel fell behind 30-0 in the game. The prolific pairing won the next four points to take the match 6-3.

Auburn would take No. 3 doubles 6-2 and all attention turned to No. 2 doubles tied up at 5. To this point, every team had held serve with Tech serving. Auburn would break this serve and take No. 2 doubles, 7-5, securing the doubles point for the Tigers.

In singles action, a pair of triumphant comeback for the Jackets from Chen Dong and McDaniel highlighted the match. Dong dropped the first set of his match 6-1 before coming back in sets two and three, 6-3, 6-2, to take his match. McDaniel flipped the switch in his singles match winning sets two and three 6-1, 6-1, taking his match.

No. 9 Martin had a tight match against No. 47 Tyler Stice. Martin dominated proceedings in set one, 6-3. Martin dropped a close tiebreaker in the second set, 7-6(5). In the final tiebreaker, Martin fell behind 6-9 before winning the next five points to take the match, 6-3, 6-7(5), 11-9.

Auburn would take No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2, No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0 and No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-1. Ultimately leading to a 4-3 victory for the Tigers.

The White and Gold are back in action against South Carolina on Sunday in Columbia, S.C.
