ATLANTA – The seventh-seeded Georgia Tech Women’s Tennis team (14-9, 5-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) will open the ACC Tournament Thursday against 10th-seeded Virginia Tech (10-12, 2-9) at the Cary Tennis Center beginning at noon.
“We played well at Virginia Tech this past weekend and I am sure they will be prepared for us the second time around,” head coach Bryan Shelton. “Our goal is to go up there and execute our plays consistently. This is what we have worked for all season long, to go to a tournament like this and have our best performances.”
The Yellow Jackets swept the Hokies, 7-0, this past Sunday by winning two of three doubles points and winning all six doubles matches. The Jackets moved to 8-2 all-time against Virginia Tech and have won eight straight in the series.
Sophomore Irina Falconi will lead the Yellow Jackets this weekend. Falconi, the nation’s top-ranked player, has won 16 straight matches and finished the dual-match season with a 22-1 singles record. She is 10-0 against ACC opponents at the top spot in the lineup.
The winner of Thursday’s match will move on to play second-seeded Miami Friday at noon. Tech, who dropped a 5-2 decision to the Hurricanes earlier in the season, is 9-4 all-time in the series.
