ATLANTA — The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will open its 2002-03 campaign by competing in the Lady Seminole Fall Classic, September 27-29. The three-day event will be contested at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Yellow Jackets will be represented by five singles players and two doubles teams in the tournament, which gets under way on Friday morning with singles competition.
Heading up the Tech individuals in the field is senior Jaime Wong, who is the second-seeded player in the singles “A” draw. Wong is coming off of a successful 2002 campaign, in which she became the first Yellow Jacket women’s player to qualify for the NCAA Individual Tournament. She will be joined in the “A” draw by sophomore Catherine Gunn, who is the fourth-seeded player in the bracket.
Jacket senior Mysti Morris is the lone Tech player in the “B” singles draw, as she is the top-seeded player in that bracket and received a bye into the second round of the tournament. The final two singles players in the event will be newcomers to the Tech program as junior transfer Maria Nieto and freshman Annelies Schenk will make their debuts for the Yellow Jackets. Both will compete as part of the singles “C” draw.
In doubles competition, the team of Morris and Wong will be the third-seeded duo in the doubles “A” draw, while Gunn and Nieto will play in the doubles “B” draw.
