Yellow Jacket Track and Field Set to Host Top Performers at Georgia Tech Invitational

May 15, 2002

ATLANTA – Many of the nation’s top collegiate track and field competitors in search of qualifying standards for the upcoming NCAA Championships will be in action at George C. Griffin Track Thursday through Saturday, as the Georgia Tech track and field program hosts the annual Georgia Tech Invitational.

The meet kicks off with the decathlon and heptathlon at noon Thursday. The multi-events will conclude Friday, while field events and several distance races open at 7 p.m. The majority of the competition will be held on Saturday, with field events beginning at 1 p.m. and running events opening at 5 p.m.

Leading the Tech men’s group will be sophomore Brendon Mahoney and junior Bryan Swarn, who each own NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Swarn has clocked a time of 45.68 in the 400 meters, while Mahoney has gone 1:48.51 in the 800 meters and 3:41.87 in the 1500, a performance posted at last week’s Cardinal Qualifier. The men’s 4×400 relay of Swarn, Sharif Azim, Olivier Deigni and Brian Ford hopes to lower a provisional time of 3:06.26.

Senior Chris Sinotte, who has set a school record in the javelin with a toss of 230’08.00″, will also try to improve his chances of reaching nationals.

On the women’s side, junior Katie Griffin has already automatically qualified for NCAAs with a school record of 33:57.12 in the 10,000, while fellow distance standout Renee Metivier owns provisionals in the 1500, 5000 and 3000-meter steeplechase.

Seniors Nicole Campbell and Sara Pardue will try to improve on provisional times in the 800 meters, as will Amandi Rhett in the 100 and Alisha McClinton in the 100-meter hurdles. Senior Mishanta Reyes is also provisionally qualified in the long jump.

Event-by-event results will be available at www.deltatiming.com, and full results will be posted each day at www.ramblinwreck.com.

With strong performances on the home track this weekend, these and several other Jackets will improve their chances of being included in the field for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This meet is slated for May 29 through June 1 on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
