Yellow Jacket Tennis Concludes Play at 2005 Michigan Invitational

Jan. 9, 2005

Ann Arbor, Mich. – Dasha Potapova and Kacie Anson concluded play at the 2005 Michigan Invitational with perfect 3-0 records in both singles and doubles action as the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team finished the tournament by winning 21-of-22 singles and 7-of-9 doubles matches against players from LSU, Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

” I was really impressed with our play all weekend,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “We finished the weekend out really strong by sweeping LSU today. Both LSU and Michigan will start out in the top 25 and we were pleased to win almost every match in singles and doubles against them. It’s very early in the season, but I am really encouraged with how well every player on our team competed. Our depth is something we’ve never had before and will serve us well this season. It was really nice to see the improvement that Esther has made since the fall. We are also excited about the addition of Whitney McCray. She has scary talent and a very bright future.”

The Yellow Jackets won two of four doubles matches on the final day of competition, as Anson and Potapova teamed together to defeat Leanne Rutherford and Alli Shafner, 8-5, while Kelly Anderson and Lyndsay Shosho downed UM’s Elizabeth Exon and Nina Yaftali, 8-6. The duo of Alison Silverio and Kristi Miller dropped their first match of the spring, falling to Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata, 8-1, while Esther van Londen and Whitney McCray lost, 9-7, to Lindsey Goldstein and Debra Streifler.

Georgia Tech rallied by sweeping all eight singles matches on the afternoon. Miller started things off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over LSU’s Staten Spencer, and Anderson followed with a victory over Amanda Mang by the same score. Potapova needed three sets to defeat Lauren Seaman of LSU, as she won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and Anson came back after winning a first-set tiebreaker against Camila Caliari to win 7-6, 6-0. Silverio dropped Marina Chiarelli by a 6-4, 6-2 mark and Shosho came back after dropping the first set 2-6 to the Tigers’ Tiffany Tucker to win 6-2, 6-4 in the final two sets to keep the Jackets undefeated on the afternoon. McCray and van Londen helped Tech to the sweep as van Londen defeated the Tigers’ Daysi Espinal, 6-1, 6-1, and McCray won a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 decision over Michigan’s Monica Sly.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action when they begin the dual-match season on Jan. 19 by hosting Georgia State at 3 p.m.
