ATLANTA – Winners in eight of its last 10 outings, the Georgia Tech softball team (22-13) entertains its second Ivy League opponent of the season as Harvard (2-8) heads to Glenn Field for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday.
Both teams competed in last weekend’s Buzz Classic at Marietta’s Al Bishop Softball Complex. The Jackets went 3-1 in the event, while Harvard posted a 1-3 mark. The Crimson plays Georgia State at the Panthers’ Bob Heck Field Tuesday.
Pitcher Jessica Sallinger, who fanned 32 batters in 16.2 innings at the Buzz, led the Jackets over the weekend. She is now 12-9 on the season with a 1.33 earned run average and 194 strikeouts in 126 innings tossed. Sallinger is just six strikeouts away from her second consecutive 200-strikeout season, a Tech first.
At the plate, junior All-American Tara Knudsen has also heated up, raising her average to a season-best .293. She leads the squad with six home runs and ranks second with 19 runs batted in.
Tech has enjoyed success against the Ivy League this season, with a March 16 sweep of Princeton, 8-1 and 4-0. The Jackets are 3-0 all-time against Harvard, including a 5-2 victory over the Crimson at the 2002 Buzz Classic. Tech swept a doubleheader from Harvard at Glenn Field during the 2001 season. Overall the Jackets are 5-1 all-time versus the Ivy League with the lone loss coming against Brown.
Following this Wednesday’s action, Tech hits the road for five consecutive doubleheaders. First up for the Jackets is a Sunday trip to Mercer, followed by an April 2 visit to Georgia.
