ATLANTA — Walton High School standout Sarah Wood, the Cobb County Player of the Year as a senior, signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Georgia Tech softball team for the 2004 season, Tech head coach Kate Madden announced Tuesday.
“Sarah is going to be a major addition to our pitching staff,” said Madden. “She is a left-handed pitcher that throws hard and has good movement. Those are some great strengths to have to be effective at the collegiate level. We are thrilled that she signed with us.”
Wood posted a 0.49 earned run average with 173 strikeouts in 149 innings pitched as senior. She also limited opposing batters to a .095 average. At the plate, Wood batted .344 with four home runs, 24 runs batted in and 21 runs scored. In addition to earning county player of the year honors, she was named first-team All-Cobb County and second-team all-state for the second consecutive season.
Additionally, Wood was selected as Walton’s MVP in both her junior and senior season and was named to the North Georgia All-Star Team. Other honors for Wood include the Ray A. Kroc Youth Achievement Award in 2003 and the Bobby Bailey Award of Athletic Excellence in 2001.
Madden’s Jackets are currently 33-17 tied for second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 3-2 league mark. Winners of seven of its last eight games, Tech travels to Auburn (25-25) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest with the Tigers.
