Yellow Jacket Men's Tennis Rallies to Down Furman, 5-2

April 7, 2002

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team picked up a key regional win over Furman on Sunday, rallying after dropping the doubles point to claim five of six singles matches and take the victory from the Paladins by a 5-2 score at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The win was the third straight for the Yellow Jackets (12-8) and kept Tech’s home record unblemished at 9-0.

The Jackets fell behind early on as the Paladins (?-?) won the doubles point by claiming two of three matches in double competition. Tech’s lone doubles win of the day came at the No. 2 spot, as the duo of Roger Anderson and David Wright defeated Furman’s tandem of Peter Netzler and Andrew Rogers by an 8-1 score.

In singles play, Tech got things rolling as Anderson set the tone for the Jackets with a win at No. 1 over the Paladins’ John Chesworth in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Sophomore West Nott was the next winner for the Jackets, as he also was a straight-set winner at No 5 singles over Patrick Fillnow. Nott won the first set by a 6-4 score and then battled back after being down two breaks in the second set to take a decisive 7-5 win.

Tech junior David Wright jumped out to a quick lead on James Cameron at No. 2 singles, winning the first set by a 6-0 score, but Cameron rallied to claim the second set 7-5. Wright then found his groove again in the third, cruising to a 6-2 win. The match was decided at the No. 4 singles spot, as the Jackets’ Joao Menano fought back after dropping the first set to Patrick Gaughan to claim a three-set victory. Gaughan won the first by a 7-5 score, but Menano won the second and third sets by matching 6-2 scores.

Stephen Moros was the final singles winner for Tech as he also rallied after dropping the first set to Ryan McCarthy to take a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3) win. Chris Henderson was Furman’s lone singles winner of the day as he downed Tech’s Scott Schnugg at No. 3 singles by a 6-3, 6-3 score.

The Yellow Jackets will finish their five-match homestand and the regular season next weekend by hosting Florida State on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Miami (Fla.) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
