ATLANTA – Irina Falconi and Sasha Krupina started quickly Thursday but ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-2, to second-seeded Hilary Barte and Lindsey Burdette of Stanford in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Doubles Championship at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
“It was definitely a rough match to lose,” Falconi said. “They are a very good team and are deserving of their high ranking. Sasha and I got off to a good start but we were not able to finish off the first set. They kept their composure and were able to get by us.”
The Yellow Jacket duo jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the first set but was unable to close it out. Stanford’s tandem came back quickly by winning the final five games for a 6-4 first-set victory.
Burdette and Barte continued to put pressure on Tech’s tandem by taking an early 2-0 lead in the second set. Falconi and Krupina won two of the next three games to cut the score to 3-2 but Stanford quickly pushed the lead back to 4-2 and never looked back.
Falconi will continue play in the NCAA Singles Tournament Round of 16 Friday against Venise Chan of Washington. The Yellow Jacket sophomore defeated Northwestern’s Samantha Murray, 6-3, 6-4, earlier in the day.
