Nov. 5, 2010

DURHAM, N.C. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team began play in the UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational by winning two of three doubles matches, but struggled in the afternoon, earning six singles wins in 10 matches. Friday’s matches were all held at the Ambler Tennis Stadium and Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the Duke University campus.

The 29th ranked doubles pair of Caroline Lilley and Sasha Krupina claimed an 8-5 win over Pepperdine’s Anamika Bhargava and Khunpak Issara. Earning the second Yellow Jackets’ victory of the day was the team of Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn, which defeated the Waves’ side of Marie Zalameda and Ali Walters, 8-5. In the third match between Tech and Pepperdine, the Waves’ Megan Moore and Andrea Oates battled to an 8-6 win over Rocio Lopez and Muriel Wacker.

“We had a very good start today and I was pleased with that, but we have to be able to sustain it,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We are developing our tools, but we have to continue to get tougher.”

Tech opened singles play against Vanderbilt, earning four wins, but suffering two losses. Krupina continued her winning ways with a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0(6) victory over No. 58-ranked Chelsea Preeg. Krupina’s doubles teammate Lilley also earned a singles win over the Commodores’ Alex Leatu, 7-5, 6-3, while Kilborn tallied her second win of the day with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(6) win over VU’s Rachael Dillon. Rounding out the day’s win total was Lopez who battled to a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0(8) win over Nelly Radeva.

Tech managed only one win in four singles matches against Pepperdine, dropping one behind the Waves in the win column for the day. The lone win came from Blau, who topped Walters 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(12).

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Saturday as they face Duke and Maryland in doubles action in Durham at 9 and 10 a.m., respectively. Tech will then make the short drive to Chapel Hill for singles matches against Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
