ATLANTA (May 12) – Freshmen Jaime Wong and Mysti Morris won singles matches and then teamed for the clinching doubles victory as the Georgia Tech womens tennis team (14-7) defeated 25th-ranked Washington, 5-3, in the first round of an NCAA Regional at UCLA.
The Yellow Jackets, making the first NCAA appearance in the programs history, advance to the regional final Saturday at 6 p.m. EDT against ninth-ranked UCLA, a 6-0 winner over Boston University. Regional winners advance to the 16-team NCAA Championships, beginning May 18 at Pepperdine.
Morris (No. 2 singles), Wong (No. 4), junior Bobbi Guthrie (No. 3) and freshman Charlotte Pernet (No. 6) won singles matches for the Yellow Jackets, and then Wong and Morris defeated Colleen Gray and Peggy Wu at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, to clinch the win.
Morris knocked off Ilona Kordonskaya in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while Guthrie won a pair of tie-breakers to defeat Gray, 7-6, 7-6. Wong improved her singles record to 18-3 with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Zuzana Stunova, while Pernet needed three sets to defeat Wu, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Washington (12-10) got wins from Kristina Kraszewsi at Nko. 1 singles and Zeta Wagner at No. 5, where Techs Laura Ozolins retired after losing the first set, 6-1. Ozolins was unable to play doubles as she and Pernet defaulted the No. 3 flight. The No. 1 doubles with Techs Pardo and Guthrie facing Kordonskaya and Wagner was even at 6-6 when the match ended.
