ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team rebounded from opening round losses on the first day of the ITA South Regional and had three players turn in perfect days on Saturday, November 4. The tournament is being hosted by South Alabama in Mobile, Ala.
Tech’s Kristen Roberson remained the only Yellow Jacket in the main draw, as she remained unbeaten in the B Singles draw. Roberson defeated Tanja Pflugfelder in the first round by a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-0. She followed that in the second round with a win over Lia Fabino in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Roberson will face Becca Baum in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
The Jackets’ Jamie Wong found success in the A Singles consolation draw as she advanced to tomorrows quarterfinals. In the first round of consolation play, Wong defeated Mojea Pavlinic in straight sets, 7-6(0), 6-1. She then followed a second-round bye with another straight-set win over Annika Bengtsson by a 6-3, 6-3 count. Wong will face Margauz Melsheimer on Sunday at 8 a.m. in the quarterfinals.
Bobbi Guthrie also advanced to the quarters of the A Singles Consolation draw. She disposed of Sally Pearson in the first round of consolation play by a 7-5, 6-4 count. She then received a bye before sweeping third-round opponent Rochelle Goldthreate, 6-3, 6-0. Guthrie will face Mari Toro in the quarters at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Mysti Morris advanced to the second round of A Consolation play before falling to Toro in a tight three-set match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-7(5).
In double play, the team of Morris and Wong dropped its second-round match in A doubles to Marcela Kotesovcovat and Silvia Sosanova by an 8-3 score. In B doubles, Tech’s team of Roberson and Guthrie dropped their second-round match to Daniela Okal and Ann-Jeanette Svantsson by an 8-6 score.
The tourney will continue tomorrow and conclude on Monday with the final rounds of play.
