Women’s Tennis Posts Strong Start at Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Georgia Tech pocketed 12 wins on the opening day of the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic, winning five doubles matches and seven singles contests. Two Georgia Tech doubles teams will compete for flight championships, while four Yellow Jackets went undefeated between doubles and singles.

The Yellow Jackets collected five doubles victories on the opening day, pushing a pair of tandems into their flight finals. Making her debut as a Jacket, freshman Kylie Bilchev partnered with Ava Hrastar to defeat Ayana Akli and Sarah Hamner (USC), 7-6 (2), in the first outing of the morning. The tandem faced Magda Adalouglou and Chloe Cirotte (MSU) in the second match, topping the Bulldogs, 6-4, to seal their place in the title match. The pair will challenge Duke’s Kelly Chen and Eliza Omirou in the final.

Carol Lee and freshman Kate Sharabura will also compete for their flight title after picking up two victories to open the season. The Jackets edged Sara Snyder and Ellie Schulson (FU), 7-6, in the morning matchup before defeating Malaika Rapolu and Bella Zamarripa (Texas), 6-1, to secure a spot in the flight two final.

In flight five, Mahak Jain and Ruth Marsh topped Kylie Duckworth and Eleonora Molinaro (Tenn.), 6-2, to move into the second match before falling to Grace Thomas/Fernanda Labrana (Texas), 6-4, in the afternoon.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets collected seven wins on the day. Opening play in flight one, Bilchev pocketed her first singles victory in the White and Gold with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-4, triumph over South Carolina’s Megan Davies. Hrastar also proved victorious in the first round of singles action, downing Vanderbilt’s Yufei Long, 6-4, 6-3, while classmate Lee rolled to a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Holly Staff of Vanderbilt in flight four.

Competing in flight seven, Jain cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Tennessee’s Callie Creath and Monika Dedaj took home a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lindsay Tulenko (USC) in flight 10. Rounding out singles action on day one for Tech, Sharabura won her first singles match as a Jacket, defeating Makayla Mills (CU), 7-5, 7-5, and Sophia Sassoli collected a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Simran Kortikere.

Action continues on Saturday with one round of doubles followed by one round of singles.
